The Georgia National Guard is investigating possible misconduct involving construction projects, according to a Channel 2 Action News report Wednesday.

Authorities would only say that the National Guard uncovered suspicious activities by a single employee and has asked for an outside investigation, Channel 2 reported.

"Several months ago the Georgia National Guard did its own internal investigation and found that there were possible illegal contracting practices happening via one employee in particular, that possibly has been going on for many years," Marytherese Tebbe, a Georgia National Guard spokeswoman told Channel 2.

The GBI said the state Inspector General was the first outside agency to investigate the allegations, Channel 2 reported.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead would not provide Channel 2 with any specifics about any misconduct involving National Guard contracts.

He would only say: "They had enough to go to the attorney general's office, and both felt there was probable cause to ask for a GBI investigation into allegations surrounding fraud connected to some projects at the National Guard."

Bankhead said the agency doesn't expect a quick resolution.

"Given the fact that you're dealing with a paper trail, then those usually take quite a while to complete," he said.
