Beginning Monday, March 18, Georgia DOT will begin replacing concrete slabs during the day on northbound Interstate 985 near Gainesville. This work will close the right lane between I-85 and State Route 20 between 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays through Friday, April 5.

In addition, the grinding and striping project awarded in Oct. 2018 to Diamond Surface Inc. will begin the evening of March 18 in the same area of I-985. Lane closures will occur between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday to Friday.

“We understand this will be inconvenient for the I-985 commuters with daytime and nighttime closures until the first week of April. However, the good news is after this project is completed the entire 96 miles from the Interstate 85 spilt to Jesse Jewell will be a brand-new driving surface,” said Assistant District Engineer, Brandon Kirby who works in the Gainesville District office.

Referring to this project as an “extreme makeover” Georgia DOT describes the project as designed to smooth the roadway’s surface, increase skid resistance and reduce noise on the driving surface. After grinding, crews will add upgraded pavement markings and raised pavement markers.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead and be aware of workers and equipment in the lanes.
