Two Red Cross shelters remained open Friday night to help people in need after devastating tornadoes struck in northwest Georgia earlier this week. Volunteers are expected to help with the clean-up efforts in Adairsville and Calhoun over the weekend, the organization said.
A 160-mph tornado hit parts of Bartow and Gordon counties Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed Thursday. An Adairsville man was killed and at least a dozen people were injured. Homes and businesses were destroyed.
The Red Cross has been helping displaced people since the disaster, providing 54 overnight stays since Wednesday, according to a news release from Jeffrey D. Putnam, executive director of the organization’s northwest Georgia chapter.
The shelters are located at the Manning Mill Youth Facility, 163-B Manning Mill Road NW in Adairsville, and Belmont Baptist Church, 126 West Belmont Drive in Calhoun.
The Salvation Army has worked with the Red Cross to serve more than 500 meals in the community, Putnam said.
Monetary donations can be made by going online to www.redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 provides a $10 donation.
