Pop-up showers that showed up Saturday afternoon around metro Atlanta were expected to give way to more severe weather the rest of the weekend.

Heavy rain, gusty winds and cloud-to-ground lightning were possible Saturday night, according to an alert by the National Weather Service. Some areas could see up to an inch of rain.

“If you’re headed out and about tonight, plan on the possibility of some downpours continuing even after dark tonight,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Saturday.

Sunday morning, lines of storms will begin to hit Atlanta, Monahan said, along with some cooler weather. Chance of rain Sunday is 60 percent, Channel 2 reported Saturday.

The main hazard Sunday afternoon and evening will be damaging winds and large hail, the National Weather Service said.
