Metro Atlanta escaped severe storms as the southern edges of the weather system that spawned Sunday’s deadly Midwest tornadoes swept through north Georgia overnight.

The back edge of the rain stretched across the southern suburbs at 6 a.m. Monday, with weather radar showing the heaviest downpours moving out of Troup and Coweta counties.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said skies would clear through the morning hours, leaving skies sunny by Monday afternoon.

Those sunny skies will continue through Thursday, although temperatures will be considerably cooler than Monday’s wake-up temperatures, which were in the 60s.

Minton predicted highs Tuesday and Wednesday in the upper 50s, warming slightly to around 60 on Thursday.

Morning lows will be in the mid-40s Tuesday, upper 30s Wednesday and low 40s Thursday.

The work week could end on a damp note, as Minton is predicting a 20 percent chance of rain for Friday.
