Henry County Animal Control received a call March 30 concerning a raccoon killed by a dog, and tests have confirmed that the raccoon had rabies. A 45-day rabies alert, as required by state law, has been issued for a one-mile area around the River Park subdivision in McDonough.
Residents living within this area should make sure that all of their companion animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, administered by a licensed veterinarian, and if not, should have companion animals vaccinated as soon as possible. Additionally, residents should be vigilant of the behavior of not only their own pets, but also of surrounding wildlife (e.g. foxes, skunks) that are acting in an unusual manner.
