Powder Springs Mayor Patricia Vaughn Monday night postponed the city council’s vote for the second time on choosing the mayor pro tem.

The city charter states “all” city council members must be present when choosing the mayor pro tem by secret ballot each January, said City Attorney Richard Calhoun.

The charter “probably can be changed according to home rule because it doesn’t change the form of government,” Calhoun added.

At the Jan. 5 meeting, Councilwoman Cheryl Sarvis was on vacation; and for this meeting, Councilman Al Thurman was absent for an unknown reason.

Councilwoman Rosalyn Neal has served as the mayor pro tem for the past three years, presiding over council meetings should the mayor be absent.
