Roswell police are warning residents of a new telephone scam being run by a man impersonating a sheriff’s deputy and targeting Ga. 400 motorists.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Holland said Monday that multiple people have told investigators that they got a phone call from a man claiming to be a Fulton County sheriff’s deputy, telling them that there is a warrant for their arrest for allegedly speeding through the Ga. 400 toll plaza without paying.

The suspect tells people that “the warrant will be voided if they pay a fine by credit card or money order,” Holland said in an e-mail.

She said police received 17 reports over the weekend from people who received the call, with some of them telling investigators they paid the demand.

“This is a scam,” Holland said.

“The police department of sheriff’s office would never call you for a payment,” she said. “Do not give out your credit card information, bank account number, or purchase a money order.”

Holland asked that anyone receiving such a call contact Roswell police at 770-640-4100.
