A 51-year-old man died Tuesday when a train slammed into him and a vehicle that had been involved in a wreck in Gwinnett County, police said Wednesday.

The incident happened on the tracks near the intersection of Amwiler Road and Buford Highway in unincorporated Doraville around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Tony Ross Lungaro, of Lawrenceville, was killed, authorities said Wednesday.

Lungaro was a passenger in a white 2003 Ford F150 driven by Lorenzo Wilkerson, 40, that was traveling south on Buford Highway. Severin Gluschak, 25, was driving a bronze 2003 Chevrolet Astrovan north on Buford Highway and failed to yield when attempting to turn left onto Amwiler Road, authorities said.

After the collision, the pickup truck came to a stop on the railroad tracks. Earlier in the investigation, police initially said that both vehicles had been on the tracks following the accident.

Lungaro got out of the truck and approached the driver’s side, possibly to assist Wilkerson, and was struck and killed by the train, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said in Wednesday’s news release.

When officers arrived minutes later, the truck was on fire. An officer who was one of the first responders was treated for smoke inhalation and remained on the scene, Gwinnett police spokesman Officer Jeff Richter said Tuesday.

Buford Highway was temporarily blocked in both directions.

Wilkerson was transported to a hospital and remains in serious condition. Gluschak was transported with minor injuries.

No charges have been filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
