A man injured when he fell from the third-floor balcony at the Mall of Georgia on Sunday afternoon was attempting to kill himself, Gwinnett County police said Monday.

The 43-year-old man went to the ticket window of the movie theater inside the mall shortly before 1 p.m. and asked for a ticket, but said it didn’t matter which movie the ticket was for, according to a police report released Monday. The man had done the same thing Saturday, theater employees told police.

Surveillance camera footage gave police more information on the man’s actions before his fall.

After moving a chair next to the third-floor railing, the man allegedly peered over the railing for about 25 minutes and at one point stood in the chair, the police report states.

Shortly before 1:15, the man sat on the railing with his feet in the chair, police said. The theater manager approached the man and asked him to get down from the railing, but the man refused and swung his legs over the railing and let go, falling backward to the floor below, the report states.

The man “intentionally went over the railing and fell to the ground floor with the intent of killing himself,” the police report states.

The man was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he remained Monday.
