People are talking about the startling image of a confident Jim Cooley armed with a fully loaded AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Cooley says he carried his AR-15 into the airport on May 28, 2015, when he and his wife went to drop off his daughter for her flight. He says he knew he wasn’t breaking any rules because he has a full understanding of Georgia’s gun laws. “You can carry in unsecured areas of the airport. Past TSA, never,” Cooley said. That got us thinking about other instances in which people have proudly packed heat in public places — either because, like Cooley, they were confident of their gun rights, or because they were fighting to protect those rights from legislative restrictions.
