An Atlanta woman was struck by a car and killed early Sunday when she stepped onto Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, authorities said.

The incident happened just after 2:30 a.m. just north of Dresden Drive, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

A State Patrol spokesman said Sarah Christy Gilliland, 35, stepped into the right lane and into the path of a northbound 2006 BMW 750i.

The State Patrol said in a statement that Gilliland was not in a crosswalk, and no charges are anticipated against the 34-year-old Roswell man driving the BMW.

Single car wreck claims driver in Midtown

The driver died on the scene of a single-vehicle wreck in Midtown early Sunday.

The wreck happened around 12:15 a.m. in the 300 block of Ponce De Leon Avenue, Atlanta police said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the driver as 27-year-old Kerry D. Harris Jr. of Atlanta. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The vehicle was traveling west on Ponce when the driver lost control in a curve and hit a fire hydrant, a rock wall and a concrete wall, police said. The vehicle ended up on its side with the driver’s door area crushed.

The investigation is continuing.
