The owner of the Westpark Walk shopping center in the heart of Peachtree City will be allowed to replace the existing metal roof with one made of architectural asphalt shingles. On Sept. 1, the City Council voted 4-0-1 to reverse a decision made by the Planning Commission, which had denied a request by CORO Realty to change the roof materials.

CORO’s attorney, Rick Lindsey, told the Council that the roof needs immediate repair because 64 percent of the center’s tenants are experiencing water damage.

City Attorney Ted Meeker said the commission acted “outside the parameters of the Land Development Ordinance,” which does not specify materials for roofing. Lindsey said the cost of using metal roofing was now prohibitively expensive, but that CORO would work with city staff to design more attractive roof enhancements.
