One man is dead and another critically injured after a barrage of gunfire rang out Monday night in the parking lot of a northeast Atlanta shopping plaza.

Atlanta police Lt. Paul Guerrucci told Channel 2 Action News that at least 20 shots were fired at the North Plaza shopping center at the intersection of North Avenue and Boulevard.

“People were fleeing as those shots were being fired,” Guerrucci said. “We don’t know if the victims were the intended target at this time.”

Guerrucci said the victims, both men in their 20s, “ran a short distance. One collapsed on Boulevard; the other collapsed on North Avenue.”

One of the victims died en route to Atlanta Medical Center, while the other was hospitalized in critical condition early Tuesday, Channel 2 reported.

Officers were in the area investigating illegal gambling when the gunfire broke out, but Guerrucci said, “we don’t believe at this time that they’re related.”
