One person is dead and six others hurt following a shooting and wreck Thursday night in southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones told the AJC Friday that the wreck happened around 10 p.m. as a suspect vehicle fled the shooting scene in the 1000 block of McDaniel Street.

Channel 2 Action News reported that someone called 911 to report multiple gunshots, and seconds later, two cars collided head-on.

When officers arrived, they found one man shot dead behind a house. Another shooting victim was inside one of the cars that crashed, and a third shooting victim told police he was hit by a stray bullet while walking down McDaniel Street.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office identified the dead man as Charles Thomas Jr., 21, of Atlanta.

Four other people were injured as a result of the wreck, Jones said. She said none of the injuries from the shooting and subsequent wreck were believed to be life-threatening.

"At this point in the investigation, it is unclear what prompted the gun battle," Jones said late Friday morning.
