On Sunday, 19-year-old Malik Golar stood to tell a story to fellow congregants at Decatur’s Greenforest Community Baptist Church.

“The power of prayer is real,” he said.

It had been a month since he was shot in the head at close range. DeKalb County police have said it was Golar's friend Jamal Kerns who fired the shot on Lansbury Village Drive, near Henderson Middle School.

In a segment over the weekend, Channel 2 Action News said doctors initially didn’t expect Golar to walk again.

But he did about a week and a half later.

"Being shot in the head and then being alive, self-determination kicks in again,” he told the news station. “Like, 'I'm not going to die. I've got to stay here, and I've got to prevail through this.'"

Golar said he’s known Kerns for years and couldn’t understand how the shooting could happen.

Golar’s father, Lamar, said he believes God used his son as a “vessel” to solve a murder.

He was referring to the death of Kerns' cousin, 18-year-old Southwest DeKalb High student Keschon Kerns. He died in May and despite publicly denying involvement, Jamal Kerns allegedly admitted to police he shot his cousin.

The purported admission came while he was being questioned about Golar’s shooting.

Motives are so far unclear in both cases.

Speaking to the church, Golar said he’s amazed he survived and can walk and talk.

He got a standing ovation.
