While Fulton County school enrollment is growing overall, north side campuses are bucking that trend.

Data presented at Tuesday’s Fulton County School Board meeting shows current school year enrollment down by 314 students across North Fulton and 40 students in Sandy Springs, the first decline for both in recent years. The director of the district’s operational planning department said the data suggests a declining birthrate has led to smaller groups of incoming kindergartners.

District officials said projections show an overall increase in the next five years. South Fulton and Sandy Springs are expected to grow at a higher rate than average, as the housing market shows signs of recovery and development and redevelopment jumps.

Countywide, current school year enrollment stands at 95,505, a gain of 410 students from the year before.
