City expands bike share program to downtown
Alpharetta has expanded its bike share program to the downtown area with the installation of a Zagster bike share station on the town green next to the interactive fountain.
There are now five Zagster stations in Alpharetta, with a sixth in Big Creek Park, Roswell, according to a city announcement.
The program started in May 2016 with 12 cruiser bikes at three stations on the Big Creek Greenway.
“The later addition of a station at Avalon and the new station in downtown Alpharetta, however, moves the city’s bike share program from being a recreational diversion to a more robust program that begins to connect key destination points,” the city said.
Bikes can be rented using the free Zagster Mobile App for iPhone and Android or at http://bike.zagster.com/alpharetta/. Annual and daily passes are available. Each bike has a basket, automatic lights, reflectors and a bell. Riders must provide their own helmets, required under Georgia law. Information: https://bit.ly/2YD1Q0M

City advances Town Center parking garage
The Holly Springs City Council has approved $111,400 in design work by its parking garage consultant, Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., for the proposed Town Center parking deck.
Kimley-Horn will work with the city and others to prepare construction documents, assist in the bid and building permit phase, help the city select a concrete precaster, and advise on parking deck security. Construction of the deck is expected to take nine months.
The precast concrete structure, to be built at 241 Hickory Road, will have 250 to 300 parking spaces, stairs and an elevator tower, gated access, no retail space and a design “aesthetically compatible to the surroundings,” according to the consultant’s letter of agreement.

Streets to close Thursday for 5K race
Motorists should avoid downtown Alpharetta during the Thursday afternoon rush hour, the city says, as the 23rd edition of the Mayor’s Corporate Challenge 5K road race closes streets in and around the area.
The race, sponsored by the city and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta, begins and ends at City Hall.
Street closures begin at 4:30 p.m. with Park Plaza closed in front of the library except for traffic exiting the parking deck. For the 7 p.m. start of the run, Park Plaza will be fully closed between Academy Street and Haynes Bridge Road from 6:50 to 7:15 p.m.
Commerce Street eastbound from Market Street to Park Plaza will be closed from 6:50 to 8:30 p.m.; all lanes of Haynes Bridge between Old Milton Parkway and Academy, from 6:50 to 8:15 p.m.; eastbound Academy between Main Street (Ga. 9) and Westside Parkway, from 6:50 to 7:40 p.m.; one southwest-bound lane of Westside between Webb Bridge Road and Old Milton Parkway, from 7 to 7:45 p.m.; and one westbound lane of Thompson Street between Westside and Haynes Bridge, from 7 to 8 p.m.
“Heavy travel delays are expected on nearby streets,” the city said in its weekly newsletter. “Avoid downtown Alpharetta if it is not your destination.”
The event also will offer food trucks, sponsors’ tents and a DJ starting at 5 p.m. Activities should wrap up around 9:30 p.m.
