A Newton County sheriff’s deputy was in a hospital Friday night after being accidentally shot by another deputy’s gun, police said.
The deputy, whose name was not released, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, according to Capt. Keith Crumb with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were at a gun range on Lower River Road when the shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m., Crumb said. The deputies were training on an active-shooter scenario when the deputy was injured, Sgt. Michael Cunningham told Channel 2 Action News.
The injured deputy was alert while being brought into the hospital on a stretcher. Deputies were seen outside the hospital late Friday, but no update was released on the deputy’s condition.
Cunningham said investigators will determine whether protocol was followed during the training.
“We need to identify if there are any issues we need to address, and, if so, address them immediately,” Cunningham said.
