1. B. Last September, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched a national tobacco-free college campus initiative to promote bans like the one proposed for Georgia. The initiative counts more than 1,100 colleges and universities in its smoke-free fold. Smoking in all enclosed state-owned or -leased facilities — including dorms and classrooms — is already banned in Georgia. The proposal before the regents would apply to outdoor spaces on campuses.
2. C. A federal judge last month ordered Fulton County’s sheriff and the chairman of the Board of Commissioners to appear in court and argue why he should not find them in contempt for violating an 8-year-old agreement to improve jail conditions.
A lawsuit was filed in 2004 claiming the jail was crowded, dirty, dangerous and chronically short-staffed, and it was resolved in early 2006 with a consent order that called for major renovations, set a cap on population and required minimum staffing.
The jail expert overseeing progress for the federal court has said the county and the sheriff constantly fail to meet the minimum requirements.
3. A. A little more than two decades ago, the building of Ga. 400 split the east and west sides of Buckhead, forcing pedestrians to walk 10 to 15 minutes out of their way to Peachtree or Lenox roads before they could get across the highway. But a new bridge in the final stages of construction will soon provide walkers one more way to ford the river of traffic on Ga. 400. Even better, it will give them direct access to the Buckhead MARTA station sandwiched between the northbound and southbound lanes.
4. D. Heery International Inc. will pay $7.5 million to end the dispute with the DeKalb County School District that has boiled in court since 2007.
DeKalb spent at least $18 million on the lawsuit, and Heery likely spent a bundle as well. The decision to withdraw from the case without recouping costs drew criticism, but the board agreed it was time to end the fight.
Heery was part of a joint venture that managed the multimillion-dollar school construction program and sued after being fired. The district alleged mismanagement and billing fraud, and countersued. Heery slapped back, contending that its termination was connected with a criminal conspiracy to misuse money from the construction fund.
5. C. The Saturday death of “Fast & Furious 7” star Paul Walker has left the actor’s loved ones bereft and could delay production of the movie, which has been filming in Atlanta for months. Walker, 40, died in a fiery car crash north of Los Angeles.
