Meria Carstarphen was Austin’s superintendent for five years.The Atlanta Board of Education voted last week to hire her as superintendent, a role whose importance extends beyond the 50,000 students in 100 city schools. She’ll also be responsible for repairing Atlanta’s educational reputation nationally and attacking the roots of poverty that lead to embarrassing academic outcomes.
2. C. Students at Savannah College of Art and Design created a housing community on the fourth floor of SCAD Atlanta’s parking garage. Three micro residences, also known as SCADPads, are 135-square-foot self-sustainable homes with small economic footprints. The SCADPad community is a working prototype of what parking deck housing would look like if unused or underused decks were turned into housing. Each home can fit in a single parking space.
