The Fayette County Water System has become the first treatment system in Georgia to implement new technology that detects and regulates certain contaminants. The Multisensor Systems units, developed in the United Kingdom, will monitor and adjust for trihalomethane, which forms when organic and inorganic matter in water reacts with disinfectants and chlorine. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, excessive exposure to THM can cause serious health problems. Fayette can now monitor THM levels in real time, rather than sending samples to a lab for analysis. One unit has been installed at the South Fayette Water Treatment Plant and another at the Crosstown Water Treatment Plant.
