Work has begun on a $3.7 million replacement fire station in Marietta that also will have a new Training Center.

With this addition, Marietta Communications and Governmental Relations Manager Lindsey Wiles wrote to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the city “would not have to take units out of service and out of town to other locations for training.”

“We are constructing the station building with training room space and will work on the other aspects of the Training Center over time as the funds become available,” Wiles added.

The location also will be able to provide training space opportunities for the Marietta Police Department, she said.

This 11,000-square-foot fire station is a replacement for the current station 56 on Allgood Road near Cobb Parkway.

In addition to the Training Center, the reason for the move to 15.5 acres on Sawyer Road is to improve response coverage by moving the station to the east, Wiles said.

Funds will come from the special purpose local option sales tax.
