New Lithonia council member sworn in
The lone candidate to qualify for the Lithonia City Council special election, Diane Howard, will be sworn into office on Oct. 5.
The city canceled the Nov. 3 special election for the council seat after the deadline for candidates to declare passed, leaving Howard as the new council member. She will finish the two years and three months left on former council member Al Franklin’s term before seeking a full four-year term in November 2017.
Franklin gave up his seat to run for mayor of Lithonia.
This is the first run for office for Howard, who has lived in Lithonia for 18 months. Howard will be sworn in at 6 p.m. before the start of the council’s meeting. The Nov. 3 general election for mayor and two other council seats will take place as previously advertised.
