Due to extensive deterioration of major components, the city of Atlanta has closed the Nelson Street bridge.

“The Nelson Street bridge has been closed by the city of Atlanta Bridge Engineers following a special safety inspection prompted by recent site visits to the area,” reads the city’s Nelson Street Closure Plan Outline.

The city is working to announce plans of a replacement bridge, which it says will be funded through the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program.

The Nelson Street bridge is listed among four “high priority bridges” on Renew Atlanta’s site that are slated for repair or replacement. The other bridge projects are located at Childress Drive, Courtland Street and Powers Ferry Road.

In addition to installing signange and fencing to prevent bridge entry, the city says additional plans include planting flowers or vegetation in the planters currently existing on site at both bridge approaches; hanging a visual barrier or decorative art on the fence; and taking suggestions from the community for further improvements in coordination with Renew’s community engagement team until the bridge has been replaced.
