A motorist whose truck broke down on the Downtown Connector early Thursday was struck and killed after he got out of his vehicle.

The incident happened shortly after midnight in the southbound lanes near Ga. 166, Langford Parkway.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kimberly Maggart told the AJC that the 60-year-old man "had a wheel come off his truck in the middle of the highway."

The man, whose name was being withheld until relatives could be notified, got out of his truck, and "several cars swerved to avoid him, but one vehicle did strike and kill the victim," Maggart said.

She said the driver of that vehicle stopped to report the accident, and will not likely be charged.
