Two motorcyclists were killed and a third injured early Sunday in a chain-reaction wreck on I-285 in DeKalb County, police said.
The bikers were traveling westbound on I-285 around 2:45 a.m. Sunday when one of them “approached a sport utility vehicle at a high rate of speed and rear-ended it,” DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.
“A second motorcycle driver was thrown from his bike after debris from the accident caused him to lose control,” Parish said.
The biker involved in the initial collision was critically injured and later died at a local hospital, she said. The second biker died at the scene.
Parish identified the deceased bikers as Sean Phillips, 37, and Ruben Bryant, 42.
“A third motorcyclist, Darien Woods, 31, was also involved,” Parish said. “He lost control as a result of the accident and landed in the wood line area.”
She said Woods was transported to a local hospital, but his condition was not available late Monday morning.
The wreck impacted traffic for almost five hours. The westbound lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m., while the eastbound lanes cleared at 7:35 a.m., the Georgia Department of Transportation said.
