More than 5,600 gallons of sewage spilled from a manhole in Buford on Monday morning, and some entered a creek tributary, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.

The spill began around 7 a.m. at 2986 West Rock Quarry Road. The department responded at 7:19 a.m. and stopped the spill at 9:45 a.m.

By the time the it was stopped, 5,643 gallons of sewage had spilled, with some entering an unnamed tributary of Little Mulberry Creek. The cause was determined to be debris, the department said.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified.

Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastroenteritis and E. coli.
