To reach Atlanta’s “food deserts” – communities without easy access to healthy food – Fulton County is kicking off the sixth season of its Fresh Mobile Farmers Market 10 a.m. June 8 at Berean Seventh Day Adventist Church, 291 Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, next to Frederick Douglass High School.
This summer, mobile units will visit 14 communities identified as food deserts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The county says it wants to deliver nutrition education along with fresh, locally grown produce to areas lacking conventional grocery stores, and whose residents often have diets high in calories but low in nutritional value.
The Fulton County Cooperative Extension started the Fulton Fresh program in 2011. It is provided at no cost to residents. To receive fresh produce, residents must live in the community visited and attend a nutrition education class that includes a healthy cooking demonstration.
