The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park and the Greening Youth Foundation will host the ninth annual Legacy Campout this weekend.
Since 2010 this program has served 500 youths throughout the Metro-Atlanta area, according to a press release. This year organizers hope to engage 75 middle school students in theme programs related to commemorating 400 years since the first African step foot on American soil as slaves, as well as the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This event serves as a gateway to the outdoors for many of the young people who attend. The camp out is a free event. Activities will take place 5 p.m. Sept. 27 to noon Sept. 28.
All activities will take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park, 423 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue NE, Atlanta.
Campout spaces are filling fast, but organizers say there are still a few available.
To register as a participant or campout volunteer go to www.gyfoundation.org/legacycampout.
Students will be exposed to many aspects of camping; including sleeping at the campsite in tents, as well as making s’mores while having campfire chats and experiencing the historic aspect of the park. They will have nighttime visits to Dr. King’s birth home and the park’s visitor center, as well as hearing from park rangers and community leaders around the campfire.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, students will participate in volunteer service projects for National Public Lands Day.
