Acknowledging a shortage of athletic fields in the community, the Milton City Council has approved spending $1.5 million to acquire 8.1 acres already laid out for soccer and lacrosse play.

The council approved a sales contract with United Athletics Inc. for land at 170 Cox Road. The city intends to use the property to support continued growth in its lacrosse program, according to an agenda report.

“The property has always been used as active field space, and it has had lights on it for many, many years,” Jim Cregge, parks and recreation director, told the council. “It was renovated two years ago with two large grass fields in beautiful condition for playing soccer or lacrosse.”

The site also has a half-size artificial turf field. Its eight-year warranty is transferable to a new owner and has six years left to run, Cregge said.

Cregge cited the parks’ 2027 master plan that encourages Milton to pursue land acquisitions such as this, noting the city was short two multi-purpose fields in 2017 and would need to acquire two more in the coming decade.
