Milton’s mayor has vetoed a rezoning measure on Ebenezer Road that the City Council had OKd toward the end of a lengthy April 25 meeting.

The council approved 4-2 rezoning a rural parcel of land on the city’s northwest side from agricultural to community unit plan for a nearly 64 acre tract of land at 745 Ebenezer Road. The change was to allow Brightwater Homes LLC to develop 45 single family homes with a density of .707 units per acre. The original plan called for 50 homes with a density of .79 units per acre.

Supporters liked the extra steps required for approval and public input for proposed development under the CUP category. The council approval came after several votes where the council and mayor split three to three on the issue.

In vetoing the measure, Mayor Joe Lockwood cited citizen concerns about the procedure used in approving the measure, perceptions that some participants at the meeting were given undue advantage and the lateness of the hour when the decision was made. The mayor wants the council to review the rezoning request a second time.
