The Milton City Council is temporarily putting the brakes on rezoning applications in the so-called Highway 9 vision area, stretching along Ga. 9 from Bethany Bend to the Forsyth County line.

The 180-day halt comes as the city is developing a master plan for the strip, including buffer zones. Both officials and city residents have expressed concern over what they claim is past over-development. The moratorium means that individuals and businesses looking to rezone to accommodate future plans won’t have to change course midstream, said city spokesman Jason Wright.

Also at its meeting late last week, the council set qualifying fees for the municipal election later this year, pegged at 3 percent of mayor and council salaries. And the council elected member Karen Thurman mayor pro-tem for the coming year.
