The Milton City Council handled a couple of zoning matters at its meeting Monday night, one of them involving senior housing.
On a 6-0 vote, the council approved a measure creating a use permit for alternative senior housing in the AG-I and single family residential districts, the first time such facilities would be allowed under those categories.
Council members had considered capping the number of seniors that could independently live in each facility at eight, but removed it in favor of state regulations that will dictate numerical limits and when such permits will be reviewed. One council member had expressed concern about limits and oversight in light of recent news stories about personal care home abuses.
The council also approved a change in the city’s sign ordinance to bring it into line with a Supreme Court decision in a case involving an Arizona church. That case has been interpreted as making it more difficult for cities to regulate signs differently based on their content.
