A public meeting to discuss concerns over toxic emissions from a Cobb industrial plant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell Middle School in Smyrna.

The meeting was called by local and state officials in response to a report showing an elevated risk of cancer in the areas surrounding a Sterigenics facility that manufactures medical equipment.

Representatives from the company plan to attend the meeting, along with county commissioners and state lawmakers. The facility is located at 2973 Industrial Court SE, Smyrna.

Concerns center on the use of a chemical called ethylene oxide, which is used for the sterilization of medical equipment, among other things. Officials say the company appears to be in compliance with current regulations, but the Environmental Protection Agency recently reclassified the chemical and new regulation is expected soon.

“We’re just wanting to give the community an opportunity to interact with the representatives from Sterigenics,” said State Rep. Erick Allen, D-Smyrna. “I just want accurate information out there so we can then make some decisions.”

The school is located at 3295 Atlanta Road, SE, Smyrna.
