During a Thursday luncheon for property owners in the Rio Circle commercial district, Avondale Estates Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager said the 90-year-old city had long been “self-sufficient” and mostly anti-development.

“The whole face of Avondale is changing,” Giager said. “The old guard is diminishing naturally and we are trying to fix our image.”

Avondale sees the 60-acre, 54-property Rio Circle as a crucial northern corridor to annex and a key to its future economic health. Giager added that next week he’ll go door-to-door attempting to convince Rio property owners not attending Thursday that there are advantages to annexation.
