Lawrenceville Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson opened the February City Council meeting with a State of the City Address around the theme, “Lawrenceville Forward.” According to Johnson, “Lawrenceville will be known as the heart of Gwinnett and the college town of tomorrow where inclusion is a way of life, new urban living is just living, and art comes to life in a talent rich regional epicenter of community.”
Johnson went on to note specific projects begun in 2017 that will be coming to completion, or at least first phase completion in 2018. Among the projects to shape 2018 are the $20 million, 58-unit ‘City View’ mixed-use development on Oak Road, the completion of the two-way conversion of Perry and Clayton streets, completion of the first phase of the College Corridor, expansion of the Aurora Theatre, and design and operation plans for the restoration of the Hooper Renwick school, Gwinnett’s first African-American school.
The city will participate in the county’s bicentennial celebrations, launch construction of the South Lawn, and develop the city’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
