Elected earlier this month and only the third known woman mayor in Decatur history, Patti Garrett will give her first State of the City address 6 p.m. (reception’s at 5:15) Tuesday at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel/Decatur Conference Center, 130 Clairemont Ave., Decatur.
Garrett hasn’t indicated what she’ll talk about, but said recently the most urgent task currently facing the city commission is pushing both the city and city schools’ homestead exemption plans through the legislature. She also said the city “very early on” needs to take the legislature’s pulse on annexation before deciding whether or not to pursue it.
Garrett announced in her newsletter Monday that Decatur resident and 2012 U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey will close the program reading her poem Meditation At Decatur Square. Trethewey won a Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 2007 and is a professor at Emory University.
