The Marietta Board of Education discussed recently whether to allow a math support class to count toward graduation instead of as an elective at Marietta High School.
For the second January in a row, Marietta High’s principal Forrestella Taylor made this request of the board.
The drawback is this class may not count toward math admission requirements for entrance into a post-secondary institution without more coursework.
Capacity has been reached at the Marietta Performance Learning Center for students who need more math help.
With math support classes required for freshmen and sophomores at Marietta High, this change would allow seniors to count one of these previous classes toward their math graduation requirement of four math classes.
Now seniors have to take a higher level math course, but 78 seniors have been identified as needing extra math help.
Of this number, 32 have completed a math support class that could count toward their graduation.
The board didn’t come to a decision.
