It seems Marietta has found someone to wear the city’s biggest firefighter helmet.

The City Council voted at its meeting Wednesday night to move forward with the city manager’s recommendation of Tim Milligan for Marietta’s new fire chief. The council still needs to vote at a special meeting on June 26 before he is officially hired.

Milligan, 44, is already assistant chief and fire marshal.

If approved, his yearly salary will be $120,000, said city spokeswoman Lindsey Wiles. Chief Jackie Gibbs earned $137,259.20 when he retired Dec. 1 after four decades with the department.

When his retirement was announced in October, Wiles said the city manager would conduct a nationwide search.

Deputy Chief Danny Rackley served as acting chief during the search.
