Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin broke the tie Wednesday night to delay a council decision about Councilman Philip M. Goldstein’s proposal to construct a building in the hole on the Marietta Square.

Tumlin and three council members voted for an exception to consider the matter on June 29 instead of following the city’s rules that would have delayed the decision for six months until Aug. 2.

Opposed to the shortened delay were Councilmen Grif Chalfant, Andy Morris and Anthony Coleman.

In support were Councilmen Stuart Fleming and Johnny Walker and Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelly.

Goldstein abstained.

As owner and manager of Marietta Properties LLC, Goldstein would like to build the three-story, four-sided brick building at 67, 77 and 87 North Park Square and 85 and 89 Root St.

The city’s Historic Board of Review recommended denial of his request on Feb. 2.
