A Marietta City Council member has been elected third vice president of the Georgia Municipal Association.

Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelly was sworn in Thursday during GMA’s annual meeting.

The municipal association is a non-profit organization that provides educational and consulting services and legislative advocacy to its more than 500 member cities, according to its website.

Kelly is now in line to become GMA president in 2023, the organization said. She has served on the group’s Board of Directors, Legislative Policy and Federal Policy councils and the Municipal Workforce Development Task Force.

Kelly was first elected to the Marietta City Council in November 2013. She is chair of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Committee and is a member of the Finance and Public Works committees.

“Mayor Pro Tem Kelly is well respected by city officials around the state,” said GMA Executive Director Larry Hanson. “She understands the issues cities face and the important role of GMA in supporting cities. We look forward to her continued leadership in this new role.”

Kelly also serves on the boards for WellStar Kennestone Hospital, Cobb Travel & Tourism, Cobb Community Foundation and Marietta High School’s governance team.

She has over 25 years of senior level experience in ensuring workplace safety and energy and environmental sustainability with the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
