The Board of Education of Marietta City Schools is one of 39 to be named a 2016 Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) 2016 Exemplary School Board, the highest of three levels.

The GSBA board recognition program is a three-year, three-tiered program, beginning with the Quality Board status.

The Marietta board exceeded previous qualifications as a Distinguished Board and earned this highest level of recognition at the GSBA annual conference on Dec. 3.

GSBA also recognized Irene Berens with a 15 Years’ Service Pin for her consecutive years of work as a Marietta City Schools board member, representing Ward Seven.

Elected to the board in April 2001, Berens now is in her fourth full term on the board.

In 1998, GSBA was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.
