A man who disappeared while swimming in the Chattahoochee River Monday night and was the subject of an overnight search was found safe early Tuesday — at home.

Fulton County fire officials said four of five people stranded on an island at the Chattahoochee Recreational Area on Barnwell Road were rescued Monday night.

Gwinnett County, Roswell and Johns Creek officials in boats searched much of the night for the fifth person, a man in his 20s. Search crews also used an infrared-equipped helicopter in the search.

But the man, whose name has not been released, apparently got out of the river on his own and went home, where he was located by authorities early Tuesday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said there was a water release from Buford Dam around the time the man disappeared. The water level can rise from six to 11 feet during that release, he said.
