A man was killed Tuesday evening when the forklift he was operating fell on him, Fulton County police said.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. at the Owens Corning facility in the 8000 block of McLarin Road, Fulton police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

The forklift operator, a 35-year-old man, was not wearing a seat belt while he was moving products, she said. He fell to the floor when the forklift tilted, then the forklift fell on him and struck him in the head. The man died at the scene.

His name has not been released.

Excel, a company that manages the Palmetto facility for Owens Corning, released a statement Wednesday offering its deepest sympathy to the family of the man, who was a temporary worker at the facility.

The company said it is "working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and internal health and safety professionals to ensure a full investigation of the incident is completed."

Workers at the site also have been offered counseling through the company's employee assistance program, Excel said.
