A bicyclist killed when he was struck by a school bus in Covington has been identified as 45-year-old Charles Peterson, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The accident happened about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 12 at Alcovy Road, the Georgia State Patrol said in a statement. There were no children on the school bus when the accident happened.

According to the GSP, the bus was traveling east on Highway 12 at Alcovy Road. The driver stopped and waited for westbound traffic to clear to make a left turn onto Alcovy Road.

The bus had a green light, and began to turn left when the traffic cleared. Peterson traveled into the path of the bus in a crosswalk at the intersection, the GSP said. The bus struck the bicycle on the left side, according to the GSP.

Peterson, who was ejected from the bike, was taken to Piedmont Hospital in Covington, where he was pronounced dead.
