An argument that escalated into a shooting Wednesday afternoon left one man dead outside an apartment complex in northwest Atlanta.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 27-year-old Whitney Wesley, who lived in the area.

Atlanta police responded to a report of shots fired around 2:30 p.m. at the Gables 820 West Apartments. They arrived to find Wesley dead on the sidewalk outside the West Marietta Street complex, said APD spokeswoman Kim Jones.

"It appears the male was shot at least one time and died on the scene," Jones said.

Investigators are interviewing possible witnesses at the apartment building but have yet to establish a motive. No suspects have been named, Jones said.

A security guard who works nearby on West Marietta Street, and who is not being named to protect him from retaliation, told the AJC that before the shooting, he saw a man jump the wrought iron fence surrounding the Gables complex and begin fighting with a resident inside.

"We saw him hanging outside the building two days before," said the guard.
