Authorities are looking into the death of a man whose body was found Tuesday in near-freezing temperatures outside a downtown Atlanta MARTA station.

Police were called to investigate at the corner of Peachtree Street and Alabama Street, not far from the Five Points station, about 4:30 a.m. The man was dead when officers arrived, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty told AJC.com.

While he has not been identified, it appears the man was homeless, Daugherty said.

Temperatures dipped into the low 30s in Atlanta on Tuesday morning. With the wind chill, it felt more like 23 degrees before the sun came up, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologists.

“The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office responded to the scene and advised that the death appears to be the result of natural causes,” Daugherty said. “Weather may have played a factor; however, the autopsy will determine the cause of death.”

The incident is under investigation, he said.
