A Gwinnett County man died from injuries he received after he crashed a vehicle he stole from a church parking lot, police said.

Nelson Hoang, 20, of Suwanee, stole the car in Lawrenceville, and soon was in a single-car crash in Lilburn, Lawrenceville police said. Hoang was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police responded about 11 a.m. Sunday to the church on South Perry Street, police said. The car’s owner said she went back into the church to get her purse, and when she returned, witnesses told her that someone had stolen her car.

While police were speaking with the car’s owner, dispatch told the officer that Gwinnett police were with the stolen vehicle, which had crashed at Ronald Reagan Parkway and Five Forks Trickum Road.
