In what is being called a freak accident, a 27-year-old man died after he was trapped between two 500-pound cotton bales.

The accident happened Monday evening at the Piana Nonwovens warehouse along Old Mill Road in Cartersville, according to Channel 2 Action News. The man’s name has not been released.

“I just hate the loss for the family,” Walter Fincher told the news station. ”That makes it hard on anyone when they lose a loved one.”

Cartersville police, fire and EMS responded, but the man was dead when they arrived.

“It appears it is an accident so we are going to do the prelim(inary) investigation,” Lt. Michael Bettikofer said, “but I believe that as it appears now it’s going to be a workplace incident.”

Workers in the area told Channel 2 the placement of the stacked bales matters in situations like this, especially when it comes to safety.

“You always gotta be cautious,” Josue Gallegos told the news station. “Either my group or I have to worry about my other guys. Safety is the first thing.”
